ORAL CARE FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES

PERIODONTAL DISEASSE AND DIABETES

There are 15.7 million people in the United States or 1 in every 15 persons in the world who have diabetes. But did you know that people with diabetes have one of the highest rates of periodontal disease? Gum disease, inflammation, bad breath and dry mouth develop in a large number of people with Type I, Type II or gestational diabetes. These complications will become more severe if the diabetes is not well controlled.

Unfortunately complications can also occur even when there has been good control. Diabetes makes the mouth more sensitive to irritations and more prone to oral infections due to an overabundance of bacteria growth. Why? Because people with diabetes

  • Have less saliva
  • Have higher sugar levels in their oral fluids.
  • Tends to lose collagen in the gum tissue, hastening periodontal destruction.
  • Experience interference with nutrition and healing in the gum tissues.

Oral complications related to diabetes are hard to heal mouth sores, bleeding gums and dry mouth discomfort. Many medications taken by people with diabetes for hypertension, cardiovascular disorders and kidney disease cause dry mouth as a major side effect.
